We in The Sharp Things are very much looking forward to 2006, especially our scheduled appearance March 17 at the SXSW music conference in Austin, Texas. But first, let’s take a look back at the significant events of 2005:
January: More than 100 fans pack Joe’s Pub for our first show of the new year. Bassist Rich Holst and violinists Andrea Dovalle and Katie Schnepp make their debut.
February: Bar/None Records agrees to release Foxes and Hounds in the United States.
March: Foxes and Hounds is mastered and ready for pressing.
April: “The Suicide Bombers” is the featured download from UK-based singles club Shifty Disco. Two hundred subscribers download the song.
May: Foxes and Hounds is released on May 10. Another packed house at Joe’s Pub celebrates the release on May 17. A full-page profile on the band appears in Harp Magazine. And if that weren’t enough, Brad Madsen makes his Sharp Things debut on trombone.
June: Rave reviews for the new CD in numerous print and online publications. “There Will Be Violins” is featured in the Donewaiting.com podcast.
July: The Sharp Things headline at Tonic and spend an hour on the radio at Z889 in Burlington, New Jersey.
August: An Associated Press article on DIY bands, featuring The Sharp Things, appears on August 10. National media including CNN.com run the piece, exposing the band to millions. A huge audience turns out for our August 29 show at The Knitting Factory, including David Byrne and former Catherine Wheel frontman Rob Dickinson.
September-October: The Sharp Things travel to the West Coast for a week of shows in Portland, Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles. We return for two shows in support of Trembling Blue Stars on their final concert tour, including Popfest! New England in Northhampton, Mass.
November: Specialty radio programs across the U.S. air a variety of tracks from Foxes and Hounds. George Lang of The Oklahoman writes: “I have seen the future of rock ‘n’ roll, and its name is The Sharp Things.”
December: We end the year with a bang, as upwards of 300 fans attend our Holiday Spectacular benefit show at the Brooklyn Lyceum. Our first video, for the song “Homeless,” receives its premiere during the event.
Wow, that was better than it seemed at the time! Onward and upward…
