Jack Rabid, The Big Takeover

#60

Having reviewed so much vintage baroque orchestral pop, how tres magnifique to get another modern one of such élan from New York's Sharp Things! Three for three and still outdoing each past: this coup de grace benefits tremendously from a real orchestra (not one imagined by synths), namely the New York Symphonic Ensemble, which invests a certain je ne sais quoi into several songs. Their previous blueprint of Divine Comedy's update on Scott Walker remains, but it's expanding: This lush pop full of douceur de vivre evinces the lovely gauze of Harry Nilsson with mid-period Tim Buckley. There's accordion waltzes; Friends Beach Boys cavorting with Ivy and Burt Bacharach's trumpets; folk pop; watershed cinematic sweep; and once again, Perry Serpa's Neil Innes-like voice, inspired by such luscious music to pen more ravishingly romantic entremets. Call this 14 "pocket symphony" achievements par excellence.
