work begins this weekend on the next sharp things album!

12 October 2006

Recording begins this weekend on our third album, A Moveable Feast, with drum tracks to be laid down at Steve’s house on Saturday.

In honor of the occasion, here’s the text of an e-mail sent by Perry to the band on October 3, outlining a tentative schedule. Of course, most of this probably won’t go according to plan — it’s highly doubtful drums will be done in a day — but we thought you’d find it interesting nonetheless.

Note: The orchestra referred to is the New York Symphonic Arts Ensemble, of which our violinist Andrea Dovalle is a member. Recording this 40-piece orchestra is scheduled for the week of November 6.

i have a suggested schedule for our recording/rehearsal situation, at least through the rest of this month. looking at open days in the space, time already scheduled, etc… the following is what i’ve come up with. it’s up for scrutiny, suggestion, ideas, etc…

note: recording WILL interfere with rehearsal days at points. rehearsals will take place to prepare for specific shows, but the emphasis from here on in is to start tracking. we’re not on a time clock, so there’s no major concern to get everything done with each one of these sessions. these are just laying out the best case scenarios. better to start working towards getting something done…

this is all i could look to with the exception of PIANO overdubs, which can be slotted in somewhere within the first two weeks of november.

i would like to get the STRINGS done within those two weeks as well, but that will depend on how many sectionals we’re able to get in before the beginning of the month. we’ll likely try and schedule in 2 more before we attempt to record.

the songs requiring ONLY the TST STRINGS are as follows:

THE JUMPERS
EVERYTHING BREAKS
DON’T U LEAVE ME THIS WAY
NOW THAT I’M BACK (just claire – i’ll get you the demo asap- you’ll recognize the part)

as for the ORCHESTRA, we need to give them a score, which we are working on. we’re close to approved by their board, so once we’re given the full thumbs up we’ll be able to schedule an exact date for a rehearsal and the recording. the orchestra will be recorded by their regular engineer who knows the hall and the equipment well.

it is essential that the majority of OUR overdubs + scratch vocals are DONE for the 5-6 tracks we will record with the orchestra, so if we find ourselves falling behind, we may want to put the following songs upfront first…

DRIVING IN MANHATTAN IN MY CAR
REY
WHAT’S THE NEW GIRL WONDER
THROUGH WITH LOVE
AN OCEAN PART 2
(and possibly STOCKHOLM STREET)

TST STRINGS (andrea, aisha, janis, claire) will SIT-IN with the orchestra on the day of the recording and rehearsal.

HORNS will be recorded POST-ORCHESTRA, so we’re talking about a session or two to be scheduled AFTER THANKSGIVING and BEFORE X-MAS.

we can expect to be tracking VOCALS at our leisure (as this is a big part of this particular record), sometime around the holidays.

mixing? who knows? get back to ya about that. early 2007?
